Do you want to be more productive and get more out of your time in front of the computer? I learned early on in my Internet Marketing career that all the coffee and all the Red Bull in the world can not even come close to matching the energy and drive that you will have if you exercise regularly.
When I first started working from home I was in great shape. I was in the gym at least four times per week lifting weights and I was eating healthy more often then not. I was fit and I my energy levels were always high. I had a routine that I stuck to. I would wake up at 6AM Monday – Friday, have coffee, stretch read the paper, work for four hours, go for a run on the beach, shower, have lunch, work for another 3 hours, go to the gym and lift weights for an hour, shower, dinner, maybe do another hour of work and then I would go to sleep early.
I stuck to this schedule while building my first business and I was super productive. When I was working I was focused. I felt good and the time I spent working flew by. I saw daily results with my business and with body and everything was moving in the right direction. I began making good money and getting in the best shape of my life.
Then something happened.. I began making a lot of money and I REALLY enjoyed spending it. I started going on a lot of vacations with all the frequent flyers miles that I was building up from using my business credit card. I was going to Vegas, California, the Florida Keys and Miami regularly. I was drinking too much, eating too much, not working out enough and quickly reversing all of the progress I had been making.
My income wasn’t decreasing at this point but it was not going up at the rate which I had hoped for and knew it could. So after about four months of partying and all but forgetting about the gym I made the decision to go home and spend at least one month focused on nothing but my business. I made daily goals and monthly goals and woke up on day one feeling ready to go. I sat at my computer that morning for about two hours and it felt like a day had gone by. I was bored, I couldn’t focus, I had no interest in what I was doing and all I wanted to do was anything but work. I had coffee and it would give me a boost for about five minutes then I would get distracted again. I had done a complete 180 from where I was when I started and I no longer had to motivation to put in the time it takes to succeed.
At first I didn’t know why; I thought maybe it was just because I had spent too much time on the same projects and that I needed to move onto something else. I tried that but couldn’t get my feet off the ground on anything else due to constantly being distracted and unmotivated. After about a week of this “sitting at the computer but making no progress” repetition I decided to get back in the gym. I had gained a bunch of weight in the past four months and but still had no motivation to even go to try to loose it.
I convinced myself to go that first day back and it made all the difference. I left the gym that day feeling accomplished and like I had achieved a goal. I went home and the momentum continued in my work. I felt good about myself again and was able to focus on my work wanting that “feeling of accomplishment” to roll into my business as well.
That night after many hours of PRODUCTIVE WORK (I had accomplished more in one night then I had in the previous week) I made a daily routine for myself. I thought back to what I did when I got started and I wrote it down. That next morning I woke up excited to start the day and I accomplish even more. I haven’t looked back since. From my own personal experience and from speaking with other successful internet marketers I am 100% convinced that you can not be successful in the business if you do not take the time to exercise.
My routine has changed a lot of the years, but here is what a typical day looks like for me now:
6:00 AM – Wake up and have coffee/read the paper
6:30 AM – 20 minute run around my neighboorhood
6:50 AM – Shower
7:00 AM – Light Breakfast while making my list of goals for the day
7:15 AM – Take on my biggest goal for the day, working from most important to least
12:00 PM – Lunch
12:30 PM – Walk to Starbucks (about a 30 minute walk)/ bring my laptop or tablet
1:00 PM – Work at Starbucks for about an hour, answering e-mails, researching new ideas
2:30 PM – Free time to do whatever it is I want to do, it can be more work, go golfing, go fishing, take care of errands, whatever I feel like doing
6:00 PM – Go to my local gym and lift weights for an hour
7:00 PM – Shower
8:00 PM – Dinner
8:30 PM – I usually work for about another hour at this time. I have energy and motivation from the gym and I find that I can be extremely productive at this time if I set a time limit for myself and get to work
9:30 PM – Play video games for an hour
10:30 PM – Bed
This is what works for me and just an example of how I schedule my days for success. I often do this Monday – Thursday then take Fridays completely off as a personal day. There are many people that go to the gym first thing in the morning, that workout through home throughout the day and that sleep in and work late. Everyone’s body is different and everyone needs a schedule that works for them. Experiment with different techniques but remember, EXERCISE IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS.
NOTE: You may see my schedule and think “how would even have time for a social life”. I realized early on that you need to be with someone who will support you and your career. I also typically do not work Friday – Sunday which allows for plenty of time with friends and family.
