Affiliate marketing is all about connecting to your target audience in the right ways. You need to build trust, authenticity and establish yourself as an authority by adding value to their lives.
But before you can actually plan out or proceed what does “value” really mean, you need to establish a persona that defines your target audience.
Establishing your target audience as a personality will help you connect with them on an emotional level and it is something that is required to build a long term healthy relationship with any human being, including the people who are gonna buy your shit.
Now, to simplify this process, what we need to do is ask ourselves a set of questions.
This is the list of questions that I research and find answers to, before I get started with a marketing campaign in a particular niche.
1. What are they really looking for?
Even though it looks like a rather easy question, a lot of people can go wrong with this.
Taking weight loss niche as an example:
The first obvious answer would be that the audience is looking to lose some weight. But that’s not the answer you should be looking for.
You need to seek the ultimate result, What would happen if they lose those extra pounds?
-> Feel better about themselves
-> Have more energy
-> Look better naked.
-> Be sexually attractive
And you need to approach your audience with these key benefits in mind, because these are the emotional attachments to the cause of losing weight and it is the “Experience” that they are going to pay for.
2. How old He(or She?) is?
Getting to know the age group of your audience will help you connect with them in a better way. Moreover, it will be easier to know how to deliver your content so that your traffic can easily sync with what you’re trying to convey.
If we you are about to start in the acne niche, then your target audience generally lies in the age group of 16-30 years.
To resonate with this age group, you really don’t have to put out professional content and you’d like to engage in a way that people of this age group do.
Whereas, if you were to target a group to promote a debt Consolidation affiliate program then your target audience would consist of females who like in the 45-64 age group and probably have a college degree. To connect with this kind of audience, your content needs to be professionally written and you need to deliver a higher value to develop trust and credibility.
3. What do they like/love/desire?
This one is important because it will be the major selling point of your pitch.
You can easily answer this question, if you’ve done your research well on the previous two questions.
Get to know what they really want out of their lives (that they aren’t getting) and recommend products that deliver it.
This way, it is a win-win for all.
4. What are other related things that they might be interested in?
When you have a list of people who are share a common problem/interest that you have the power to solve and you already have worked hard to build a relationship with them, it makes perfect sense to inquire about different but related things that they might be related in.
You can recommend better products to them and this will give you a better chance to generate more profits without expanding your list.
Let’s take a quick example to understand this concept in a practical way.
Let’s consider that you’re working in the weight loss niche, so if we’ve done our research well then we already know that our target audience consists of women who belong to the 45-65 age group.
Now some related problems/interest that these women might have are :
b. Inability to follow a strict exercise routine
c. Master Cleanse
And these are two big industries in themselves, you could offer free content/reports on these particular niches and build a list of people who are interested in each of these specific niches and recommend good products to them.

How to perform the research
Now this is easier than you might expect it.
Websites like Alexa.com and Quantcast make it really easy to get acquainted with the target audience.
Just find one of the leading sites that cover your niche or you can simply use the homepage of the highest selling product in your niche and find all the details you need by searching it’s stats on the two sites mentioned above.
