Affiliate marketing is a very promising niche. However, before you can reap you will have to sow a lot. It is not just about sowing but about sowing in the right way. Some affiliates work day and night yet, never reap results. This could be because you are doing something wrong. Below is a list of 5 fatal mistakes that affiliates commit:
1. Placing AdSense Ads:
If you are an affiliate then forget about AdSense ads. Visitors not only get distracted by the ad but you lose every visitor once they click on them. AdSense places ads according to the content. If bodybuilding products are sold over your site then AdSense will show another competitive product. The reader has now a choice. Obviously, the reader clicks on the ad and never returns. Therefore, avoid AdSense ads altogether.
2. CPA banners are ineffective:
Ever been asked to place a CPA banner? Never accept such offers. CPA banners are completely ineffective. Rarely will action be executed through these banners. For instance, CPA banners just lure in the visitor. They do not provide much information. Upon clicking the banner, the visitor is thrown with information about the product. Unfortunately, the visitor is unprepared and goes off.
However, CPA banners can be effective. For effectiveness, you need to ensure that they are relevant to your site as well as readers. Personally, I have known Zac Johnsons blog. It has CPA banner for NeverBlue, which is an affiliate company. Zac as a single individual has referred more than millions of users. The magic was not in the banner but in the need of the readers. If you provide offers for which your readers are desperate, chances are that they are going to take action.
3. Selling products through button ads:
Placing ads in the sidebar and wishing that users will click through and buy the product is just a fantasy. Readers require information before they can purchase. Furthermore, they need proof or assertion that the product really works. An ad in the sidebar does nothing but to entice the readers. Ads such as these are very powerful when branding is required. On the other hand, if you are trying to sell something, using ads in the sidebar should be the last thing on your mind. By placing ads, your readers are unsure of the product. Users will click and land on the sales page. Finally, not finding the necessary information they quit.
4. False promises
I have seen people trying to sell a product with false promises. Okay, you will make sales. However, soon enough your reputation is under question and no sales are generated. Let me show this with an example. I purchased a laptop through an affiliate in 2010 December. It was from a reputed company. While purchasing I was guaranteed to receive a mobile phone and a tracksuit. It is 2012 and not even a single word from them. Upon researching over the net, I found the gift was never received by anyone. Some have even charged the affiliate with court orders. Though the company is still alive hardly people purchase through them.
5. Old Fashioned Ads:
This is the funniest part. I landed on a page, which said, “You are winner of an iPad. Buy it now and receive an iPhone Free. You have only ten minutes to decide”. Below there was a digital clock which was counting down from 10 minutes. I decided to wait until the end of 10 minutes. As soon as 10 minutes was completed, the clock again started its 10 minutes countdown. Users are knowledgeable these days. They are not going to fall into such pranks.
Affiliate marketing is not easy. Nevertheless when done honestly and with a pint of proper marketing you can reap success.
